Supporting Children’s Visual Health

80% of a child’s learning is visual. Kids rely on their eyesight to understand and process the world around them. When children don’t have access to management or treatment options, vision-related learning difficulties occur.

Many kids don’t recognize that they’re having vision problems, or don’t have the language to express it. Our children’s eye exams are designed to determine your child’s visual needs, even if they don’t have the words to communicate what they see.

We’re also committed to improving access to vision care. Supporting children’s vision needs from an early age is crucial to development. Dr. Bishop & Associates provides eye care accessibility to young kids through the Eye See…Eye Learn program.

When to Book Your Child’s Eye Exam

Your child should get their first eye exam between the ages of 6 to 9 months. After this point, we recommend bringing your child in for annual eye exams to preserve and protect their ocular health.

A big part of most children’s school experience is visual, so yearly comprehensive eye exams are important to help them keep up with their classmates, and protect their development.

Childhood is a crucial time for developing eye health and visual abilities. Diagnosing symptoms early can prevent eye problems. If left untreated, minor problems can become significantly more challenging to resolve as kids grow up.

Assessing your child’s eye health and vision can prevent and diagnose common childhood eye conditions, including:

What is Eye See…Eye Learn?

Eye See…Eye Learn is a program designed to give children the eyewear they need before starting school. All you need to do is book an eye exam for your kindergarten-aged child and let us know that you’d like to take advantage of the Eye See…Eye Learn program. If your child’s exam shows that they need glasses, the program will give you a free pair.

Myopia Management

Myopia (nearsightedness) is the most common refractive error and is one of the most common causes of vision loss worldwide. Approximately 30% of Canadians have myopia, but the prevalence of myopia is increasing. By 2050, half the world will be myopic.

The visual condition causes blurry distance vision, but near-vision is sharp. For example, you can read a book clearly, but you can’t read the words on a road sign.

When the eyeball is a bit too large, it impacts how light focuses in front of the retina and appears blurry.

Symptoms of myopia include:

  • Headaches
  • Blurry distance vision
  • Eye strain or fatigue
  • Squinting to see far-off objects

There are many options for treating and managing myopia, however, the most effective treatment for myopia starts in childhood. These treatments help slow the progression of myopia in children.

Typically, symptoms of myopia begin between 6–14, but children may experience symptoms sooner. As soon as symptoms are observed, it’s time to begin myopia management.
