About Our Practice

In addition to his Doctor of Optometry from the University of Waterloo, Dr. Bishop also earned his pharmacological therapeutics certification from Northeastern State University of Oklahoma. He graduated in 1983 and has been practising optometry in Alberta ever since.

In the following years, Dr. Bishop has seen all sorts of patients, from a few months of age to just under 100 years old. Thanks to Dr. Bishop’s dedication to innovation and medical advancement, you’ll likely see new technology every time you visit us. Dr. Bishop enjoys fitting contact lenses, especially those hard-to-fit ones.

Dr. Bishop has donated his services on Gift of Sight Missions many times, visiting Bolivia, Laos, Tunisia, Peru, the Dominican Republic, and Argentina. At home, Dr. Bishop participates in year-round programs to make eyewear available to people in need.

Dr. Bishop has 2 children. His daughter is a practising registered nurse at the Rocky View Hospital, and his son is now a licensed optometrist with us. Dr. Bishop grew up on a farm until age 12 when the family of 6 packed up and moved to the big city of Calgary. He now spends his non-office hours on his ranch with his cows that he lovingly calls his “Moo-Moos.”

As Dr. Donald Bishop’s son, Dr. Eric Bishop has been involved with Dr. Bishop & Associates since he was quite young. He completed his Bachelor of Science in biology at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.

Dr. Bishop obtained his Doctorate of Optometry at Midwestern University’s Arizona College of Optometry. While in Arizona, Dr. Bishop organised and attended free community vision screenings throughout the Phoenix area.

Aside from being the events coordinator for his school’s on-campus Lion’s Club, Dr. Bishop successfully submitted and presented 2 studies at the American Academy of Optometry’s yearly meetings. One of these studies was then published in the peer-reviewed journal Optometry and Visual Performance.

Dr. Bishop also accompanied the California Lions Giving Sight on 2 trips to Mexico to provide free vision evaluation, ocular health care, and glasses to the local underserved residents.

In his final year of education, Dr. Bishop completed his clinical externships. His focus was in diagnostic imaging and ocular diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration.

During that same year, Dr. Bishop attended the Veterans Affairs hospitals in downtown Detroit and Providence, Rhode Island, Norton Sound Regional Hospital, and surrounding villages in Nome, Alaska, and a private practice in Glendale, Arizona.

Dr.Bishop also fits a variety of unique and different contact lenses for all different types of eye conditions: keratoconus, grafted or irregular corneal fits, and astigmatic presbyopia.

Dr. Bishop has a special interest in myopia management and is passionate about minimizing myopia progression in children. 

In his spare time, Dr. Eric Bishop enjoys playing the guitar, playing in a band made up of high school buddies, photography, and travel.

Dr. Geena Hawker attended optometry school at the Arizona College of Optometry in Glendale, AZ. She graduated in June of 2022 and is excited to be home and practicing in Calgary. 

Being the daughter of two nearsighted parents, Dr. Hawker developed an appreciation for eyecare at a young age. Throughout her schooling, her appreciation grew into a passion. Dr. Hawker has a special interest in myopia management and pediatric optometry. 

During her last year of school, Dr. Hawker had the opportunity to work alongside Ophthalmologists in Arizona. She also provided optometric care at a private practice in Tennessee and a federally run hospital serving members of the Aaniiih and Nakoda nations in Ft Belknap, MT.

In her spare time, Dr. Hawker enjoys camping, hiking, and hanging out with her husband and their dog, Odin.

Dr. Wang completed his medical degree (MD) at the Shandong University School of Medicine (China) in 1991.

After working as an ophthalmologist in Qingdao Eye Hospital for 2 years, Dr. Wang accepted a postdoctoral position in Kumamoto University School of Medicine in Japan, where he devoted his time to medical research. Dr. Wang got his Doctor of Optometry degree at Pacific University College of Optometry in 2004.

Dr. Wang is actively involved in blindness prevention and treatment missions, including the ORBIS, the Flying Eye Hospital. His experience includes myopia reduction and prevention through contact lenses.

Dr. Wang’s native language is Chinese and he also speaks fluent Japanese. With extensive experience and a compassionate approach to eye care, Dr. Wang strives to provide excellence in a gentle and informative manner.

Dr. Wang loves to play volleyball in his spare time. As a matter of fact, he played in high school and university for 9 years. Dr. Wang says that different cultures and multi-disciplinary academic training have opened his eyes to be a better clinician.

Dr. Andy Hoover has lived in Calgary since 1988. After completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Calgary, he pursued his optometric education and graduated in 2006 from the InterAmerican University of Puerto Rico.

Dr. Hoover has been with Dr. Bishop & Associates since his graduation.

When he isn’t working at Dr. Bishop & Associates, Dr. Hoover likes to spend most of his time with his wife and 2 young children. Having grown up near the mountains, Dr. Hoover enjoys hiking, climbing, and skiing.

Dr. Laurel Harmar was born and raised in Calgary, where she completed her undergraduate degree at Mount Royal University before moving to Glendale, Arizona to obtain her Doctor of Optometry degree.

Dr. Harmar had rotations in Arizona, California and Utah. During these rotations, she gained extensive experience working alongside ophthalmologists and in specialty clinics focusing on pediatrics, glaucoma, and dry eye.

Outside the clinic, Dr. Harmar is an avid adventurer who loves the mountains, spending her free time hiking, camping, and rock climbing.

Dr. Anh Q. Nguyen grew up in Saskatoon and then moved to Calgary, where she attended the University of Calgary. She graduated from InterAmerican University of Puerto Rico, School of Optometry in 2006 magna cum laude.

Dr. Nguyen participated with ASVO/VOSH and the Lion Club, going on 3 missions to the Dominican Republic to provide humanitarian care to underserved communities.

Coincidently, Dr. Rakesh Tailor and Dr. Andrew Hoover were her classmates. Dr. Nguyen practised in Houston, Texas, before moving back home to be with family.

Dr. Nguyen speaks Vietnamese. She enjoys visiting new places, trying different foods, and eating exotic fruit. Her travels have led her to most major cities in the United States and Europe. In her spare time, Dr. Nguyen likes to research future travel destinations, curl up with a good book, and play tennis with her friends.

Dr. Thao Nguyen was born in Vietnam and moved to Canada when she was 7 years old. She attended the University of Calgary for her Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in biology.

She continued her education in Florida, where she earned her Doctorate of Optometry at NOVA Southeastern University, College of Optometry.

Dr. Nguyen completed her internship at NSU Eye Institute, where she gained experience in primary eye care, contact lens fitting, and ocular disease management. She pursued her interest in ocular diseases and gained experience in surgical co-management at Aker Kasten Eye Center and Dan and Hoffmann Eye Centers of South Florida.

During her optometric training, Dr. Nguyen volunteered for the Special Olympics Opening Eyes to provide vision screenings for young athletes with special needs.

Dr. Nguyen returned to Calgary after optometry school to pursue her career as an optometrist. She is a member of the Canadian and Alberta Association of Optometrists, and the Calgary Society of Optometrists.
In her spare time, Dr. Nguyen loves to shop, watch movies, hike, read books, and spend time with family and friends.

Dr. Melissa Ah-Seng grew up in Cochrane, Alberta. She attended the University of Calgary and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 2010. Dr. Ah-Seng went on to complete her Doctor of Optometry in 2014 at the University of Waterloo, Ontario.

Over the course of her training, Dr. Ah-Seng completed multiple clinical rotations, including at the following locations:

• University of Waterloo School of Optometry and Vision Science (Waterloo, Ontario)
• Maroubra Optometrists (Sydney, Australia)
• Eye Associates of Pinellas (Pinellas Park, Florida)
• Iris (Calgary and Cochrane, Alberta)

She is a member of the Canadian Association of Optometrists, the Alberta Association of Optometrists, and the Calgary Society of Optometrists. Dr. Ah-Seng looks forward to fulfilling your eye care needs.

When she isn’t working, Dr. Ah-Seng can be found at the rock climbing gym, trying out new recipes in the kitchen, or spending quality time with her husband and daughter.

Dr. Chris Workman moved to Canada from the UK in 1998. He was raised in Calgary, Alberta, which he proudly calls home.

Dr. Workman earned a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Calgary in 2014, and a Bachelor of Science from Athabasca University in 2017. During this time, he rose to leadership positions in multiple industries and performed research in the areas of nutrition and microbiology.

After graduation, Dr. Workman began working as an Optometric Assistant with Dr. Bishop & Associates. This position inspired him to pursue a career in optometry and he completed his Doctor of Optometry degree at the University of Waterloo in 2023. During his training, he also performed research on dry eye disease at the Centre for Ocular Research and Education.

When not providing care, Dr. Workman enjoys reading, hiking, golfing, watching films, and traveling the world.

Dr. Rakesh C. Tailor started his pre-career with Dr. Bishop & Associates in 1997 as a technician while earning his Bachelor of Science in psychology at the University of Calgary.

After graduation, he decided to pursue his passion for optometry in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He graduated in 2006 with honours as a Beta Sigma Kappa International Optometric Honour Society member. As a Doctor of Optometry, Dr. Tailor returned home and took up practice at Dr. Bishop & Associates.

Dr. Tailor takes time out of his regular work to support and distribute worldwide eye health care through the OneSight program. He’s also volunteers at CUPS (Calgary Urban Project Society), a non-profit organisation with a series of programs and services dedicated to providing primary health care to adults and families living in poverty. In addition, Dr. Tailor has donated his time and services to underserved communities in Mexico, Punjab, Goa, and Thailand, with the eyeglass recycling program.

Dr. Tailor is a member in good standing with the Alberta Association of Optometrists and the local Calgary Society of Optometrists.
Dr. Tailor is an avid Calgary Flames fan during the winter months. In the summer, when not working or travelling, Dr. Tailor enjoys spending time locally with family and friends. He also likes going on local mountain road trips to take in what Calgary and the surrounding areas have to offer.
